Hey yall I would like to thank you in advance with what ever info you can give me. I have a 1986 F150 super cab XL 302 EFI, 4spd 2wd dual tanks. I have also just purchased a 1993 F150 super cab XLT 302 EFI, auto, 2wd, dual tanks. This truck has been wrecked and I bought it for $200 What parts will I need to swap from the 86 302 to the 93 302 or will my harness plug into the 93? Also has any one deleted the frame rail high pressure pump for a in tank high pressure pump from a later model?
At most there are 2 parts need to be changed to give your a direct swap.
Look for the IAT sensor on the '93, if it is in the airbox you will need to swap the '86 intake onto this motor. The IAT is in the lower intake on the '86 and therefore produces higher and more consistent readings than the airbox location. If you extend the wires in the '86 harness to reach the airbox location the computer will operate in open loop more than it should and this will have negative effects on fuel consumption and engine wear.
And you will have to take the distributor drive gear off the '93 and put it on the '86 dizzy, the '93 motor has a roller cam while the '86 has a flat tappet and these require different gears. But the '93 motor also uses a remote TFI module so you can't simply swap distributors... hence the need for a gear change.
The in-tank high pressure pump setup is a better design IMO, so if you have the time and inclination I'd do it. You will need to swap the gas tanks though as the opening in the top for the pump is larger for the high pressure pump.
