I think the orange wire is for the sending unit in the fuel tank, at least that is where is goes in my friends 1977 F250 4x4.

Ya, I know. Problem is, I got one orange off the selector switch and two open ended orange wires in the dash. Don't know which is which.

One goes to the fuel sending unit behind the seat. The other one (ready for this cuz it's gonna b confusing) is spliced into a green/red wire that comes from the same harness.

I live up about 20 miles north of Mineral Wells. Mapquest shows 142 miles from here to Waco.

Just a couple under the hood. I think I can get rid of most of them as they are not factory. Its splices that the previous owner has put in. I just have to figure out why he had em first.

Is it possible they could be for aftermarket add on stuff like an amp meter/ volt meter or electric fan?
If all you have left is under the hood....that wiring can be made real simple.
Also....while you're working under the hood, have you considered doing the head light relay upgrade?

Update - I just bought a 78 half ton for 100 bucks that should be delivered here in the next 30 minutes or so. It has all the same options mine did so I will swip that unmolested wiring harness and give it a whirl. They claim the 390 and tranny are still good. Was running 2 years ago when parked.

doc - Elaborate on the headlight upgrade please.

The headlight upgrade is where you wire in some relays between your head light switch and the head lights. It makes them burn all most twice as bright. I did it to mine and it works great.

I'm not that good at reading schematics, but mine show that one orange wire (#974) from your selector switch runs to the fuse box and hooks into Fuse #3 which is the 7.5 amp fuse for Aux. Fuel. This wire probably sends power to the selector switch on the dash.

The other orange wire (#286) runs to the instrument panel and connects to the printed circuit board which most likely is your fuel level gauge signal.

When you flip the switch to Aux Tank the orange wire from the fuse block send juice through the switch and activates the tank selector valve solenoid via the Brown/White wire. The default is: no juice = main tank selected.

At the same time a path is opened for a signal from the aux. fuel tank sending unit to travel through the switch (green) and on toward the printed circuit board via the other orange wire and then to the fuel level gauge to tell you how full the auxiliary tank is.

If you have an in cab tank and a bed tank then: cab = main, bed = aux.
If you have 2 bed mounted tanks then: behind axle = main, front of axle = aux.

Hope all that makes sense.
