Overloaded Payload

Okay, I overloaded my truck yesterday. I picked up a pallet of porcelain tile from store. I could not get any technical information from the order taker so I could not find out the weight while picking it up at store. Got home, weighed individual box at 57 lbs, I had 24 of them on the pallet, net weight was 1,368 lbs for the pallet of tiles. Include my fat 200 lbs, total payload was 1,568 lbs. Yellow sticker in door states 1,402 lbs max, drove it home 166 lbs overweight. Did not notice any problems, used “tow/haul”, drove nice, needed to brake sooner, definitely felt the weight trying to stop.

Ford is conservative with their ratings for safety sake.... 166 over isnt going to break the bank. The biggest limiting factor on these trucks are the tires.

yes, the tires are main concern, truthfully that's nothing for a ford, however a Chevy would be a banana after weight like that and a dodge would blow the tranny, course we all know the tundra isn't a truck

How do you figure? From the looks of the pic he has 17" LT Goodyears from factory with a max load rating of 2,600lbs each. Thats 5,200 per axle and 10,400 total. With a GVWR of 7,200 and a rear GAWR of 3,850 the tires are not the issue.

Even with factory 4 plys its not an issue.

Now fairness in conversation, I haul a heavy camper with a lot of tounge weight and I went to 10 plys for the lateral stiffness to cut down on sway issues, plus as an added measure of security when its a hot summer day and they're 70% worn etc...

Never had general but the conti's that came on my 09 SD seem to be decent HT tire. Many on here call em absolute junk, IMO they seem to be a great tire for the road. I doubt they would do well with any amount of mud but you cant blame that on conti, they arent suppose to be MTs lol. I'll see this winter how they do on snow/ice, their tread pattern seems very similar to my other michilen LTX M+S (maybe not quite as good, but similar) so we will see.

I know the tires that come on the expedition back in 05 or around then were not bad for the road. Continetal or General not sure what one by the in-laws had them and they replaced them with over 50,000 miles and they were still in good condition. NOW the ones on my f150 4x4 were not worth a darn.

My brother in law has an 06 Dodge 1500 4 door and the sticker in the doors says max payload 1108lbs and he has put 2000 lbs of pellets for his pellet stove a few times, it squats low but but the short trip home with no problems

my buddy has a chevy 1500hd 7 or 8lug, it handled 2k no prob, said his trannie was slipping in and out but no issues with suspension lol. i wouldnt worry at all about that kinda weight. i usually judge my capacity by how much the suspension squats, and how bad the tires are cupping, although with the 10plys they dont do that much.
