Angry Need MORE parts

Just found out I need a driver's power door lock actuator plus all clips & linkage for a '91 F-150. HATE going to the dealer, possibly could find in a junkyard here ( at least the actuator ). Concerned with #1, their price. #2, is it going to work? #3, if #2 no, will they take it back ( probably not ). Would rather deal with someone here. Have had good results with the answers to my questions from people here. Thought I'd give you a try first. Also need the cable for the shift indicator ( auto. on column ) same truck. Saw somebody on here before from Foristell ( Mo. ). Not too far from me. If they have any of these parts, would like to talk to them. Will try Craig's List. Guy on there always parting out trucks, called him & left a message. Waiting for a return call. Have dealt with him before, got a couple wheels from him.

Supporting the OEM via OEM parts from the dealer isn't a bad thing... and sometimes its the quickest. They will get you the right part needed. Save youreslf some stress, pull the old part, take it to the dealer, get the right OEM part and be done. My .02

Just find dealers EXPENSIVE . If dealer only item, yes. Otherwise I try used / The Zone . Sometimes no choice. Yes MOST times the dealer will give you the right part & it's original equipment, so it should fit right. Thanks for the reply, sorry if I seem negative. Was hoping for a CHEAP fix. Not this time.

Try Jeff's broncograveyard, I believe they are a sponser here (Bronco Forum?) and the F-150 shared the same parts with the bronco and F250/350 and some of the old superduty(~F450) trucks of the time (not the 99+ superduties). It isnt that bad, as its a common enough part on the Power lock, as manufacturers love to commonize a part for expense reasons. Besides, it will give you the oppurtunity to get aquainted with salvage yard dealers and figure out the less desireables from the desireable dealers, as well as if you can get a certain part from a car or not.

PS. I have found parts at the dealer that were surprisingly cheaper than those found in the aftermarket. So dont knock the dealer, use them as a price comparision so you get the best deal for the money. (I have only used a local dealer a few times for parts: key switch pieces in the column as well as shift forks for the B/w 1356 transfer case.) They also have diagrams to help you figure out what part you need even if you only know the location of the part but not the name of it.

There are a number of dealers that sponsor FTE that sell dealer parts at a discount, often a considerable discount, to members.

Yhea, you have to wait for shipping, but if you need a bunch of stuff you can save a ton.

keep in mind you can call your dealer tell them what you have and get the price, whether they have it in stock, and the part number... I find it is way easier to get the part number from the dealer and then you can look for aftermarket or used online with a simple google search. We have a salvage yard by me that charges you $1 to go out in the yard and lets you pull it and if it doesn't work they give you a full refund. I usually try to drive my truck when i go so I can test the part before I leave (cuts down the long return trip I never want to make).

I got one of those aftermarket (made in China) door lock motors and it didn't even last a month. Total garbage. I broke the old one apart, oiled the motor, put it back together and it never failed again. Sometimes the lock motor is simply rusted, other times it's the plastic part that breaks.

Will suggest trying that to Tech. school instructor. Truck is there now. Probably a couple more weeks before they're done. Rained here last 2 - 3 days. Rain messes up my phone line. Computer goes through phone line. Sit here & play games, it won't do anything else. Comes & goes. Can go to library, may have to if it keeps raining. Thanks for the suggestion.

Agreed on trying to clean and relube the old actuators, I have successfully revived several window motors this way. Even if it don't work out, at least the kids at the tech school can probably learn something new from it. Personally, when my power lock actuators died, I just pulled them out the doors - the locks work just fine without them, and I have the habit of locking my keys inside way too often when I use power locks. Power windows, now those I must have in good working order

Angry

Still looking. No dealer anywhere near here ( am near St. Louis ) has the shift indicator setup. Tried FTE sponsors. They don't have ir either, on back order with no estimated date. Last dealer I talked to said the closest dealer was in Alabama. Tried junkyards, one wants $10.00 more than a new one from the dealer. Not a happy camper. Anybody near St. Louis that might have these parts? Truck is in the shop right now & would like to get this fixed while it's there. Please help. Door lock actuator can't be rebuilt, found out it's not there. Have no explanation. Just bought this used a couple months ago. Other one is there & works okay. The one for the driver's door is gone??!! Rain again yesterday, am going to have to have a nice friendly polite talk with the phone co. This is getting old in a hurry. Need my computer. I go through withdrawl without it. Not a pretty sight.

Honestly... You can gamble on getting a used door lock actuator or buy an after market one... If you are trying to go cheap that is. Either way all the actuators after market are made in China or Mexico. I'd just spend the $20-$30 and put one in off the internet. If it goes bad in a year you still haven't lost much doing so.

1980 - 1991 Ford F-150 VIC DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR - AM Autoparts

PS: my 88 has been running on the actuator above for 2-3years now. It's just a gamble whether you get a good one or not. You can also probably find one with a warrenty too.

1ATony, big thanks. You just made a sale. Ordered & on it's way. Like your prices. Junkyard here wanted $75.00 for the same thing. Yours is new & only $25.00 including shipping. Now if I can find my shift indicator. New at dealer $40.00. Junkyard price $50.00. Dealer doesn't have one & no idea when they can get one. Couple places here on FTE were $30.00. Out of stock, on back order with no estimated date. Things are looking up.
