smoking engine

I recently completed an engine swap (replaced a 390 with another 390).

I noticed the engine smokes a little. I took off the oil cap from the valve cover and thats where the smoke is coming out of. Not crazy amounts or anything, but smoke is coming out.

Any ideas?

Id try replacing the head gasket / checking drainback. Had a problem with a '87 Grand Am like that.

Luckily I have a gasket kit in the shed.

What was the condition of this engine that you put in?
"Blow by" is the condition that you have. This is simply compression getting past the rings.Often a stuck pcv valve can also promote this.
Not sure I would be tearing the heads off yet.
Compression check and leak down verification would be a place to start.

Engine had 90k miles on it. It was owned by a retired Ford mechanic and he said he took good care of it.

I put a new pvc valve in when was in the middle of the swap. I'll recheck it though.

My buddy has a compression and leakdown tester, I'll have to borrow it.

That would be the first order of business to see what the compression is. Come back with the numbers for each cylinder, and we can go from there.
