Electrical!!!!

Hi Again,

I am still having issues with my electrical I can figure this out. I have an 1985 F250 XL it has a 460 gas. I was having issues when the temp reached operatin tempature and when i stopped and it came to an idol it would just shut off? Now its just dead. It does not do anyting when i try to turn it over. I have replaced the Duraspark II and the Coil, and i am still having the same issue. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks

When it "just shuts off," what does that mean? All electrically-operated
accessories stop functioning? Do the headlights work when this happens? Or, is
it merely that the engine stops running as if they ignition key had been turned
off?

What do you mean when you say it "does not do anything" when you try and
turn it over? Does the starter motor engage and turn over the engine? Or, is
there absolutely no activity, as if there were no battery in the thing?

What led you to go replace those ignition components?

Let me pass on a little something I find useful when trying to help over the 'net.

You got your diagonostic "tree" OK ... but all them questions are a little bunched up.

Keep all you questions and statements on individual lines ... some folks have better reading skills than others ... but more importantly .... you would be treating each of your questions as a "procedure" and make them a bit easier to follow

Thanks for the replies! So as you know, I have a 1985 F250 XL with a 460 (7.5L). A few months back I was driving home from work and right after I got off the freeway the truck died. It did not sputter or shake- it just died. It did backfire once on another occasion, and then it just shut off. My electrical system seemed to be working then- the lights were working, etc. and it would crank but it just would not fire over. I let it sit for a few hours and went back and it fired right over. I was told it was probably my alternator going out, so I had that replaced and that seemed to fix the problem for about 30minutes. After I picked the truck up from the mechanic, I took a short drive and right after I got off the freeway and came to an stop, and again it just stopped. There was no sputtering or anything; it shut off like someone hit the switch. I figured it was the coil because I had a 73 charger that was having similar problems and that was the issue. I replaced the truck’s coil, and it still the same problem. When the truck gets to operating temperature it will shut off if it goes into idol. I then thought I would replace the Voltage regulator, but I was told that the truck did not have a regulator and instead it was regulated by a Duraspark II system. I replaced that and my Idol speed seemed to be a lot better but it still shuts off after the truck warms up. I could not figure out what was going on so I decided to play around with it a little and I noticed that my battery was over 9 yrs old. I went down to the local auto zone and picked up a new battery just because it was needed, and about 2 days later I went to start the truck and the battery was completely dead. I took that in yesterday to get checked and they stated that it was completely dead and needed to be replaced. I put a new battery in the truck yesterday, and he fired right up. He was running roughly but he started, nonetheless. I am going to do a full oil change and plugs this weekend. I looked at my distributor yesterday as well, and when I opened the cap it had a metal powder all over. I blew it out, but would my pickup coil do that when it gets warm? The last time I had it started was about 2 weeks ago and when it died it kept trying to turn over by its self, until it just shut off. I Just picked up an ignition switch but I am having some trouble finding the switch. I think I will have to drop my whole steering column. If anyone has any info on my Pick up Coil and knows if it would or could drain my battery, and if it would or could kill the truck if it got warm enough- I would appreciate it if you helped me out. Any info will be good for my weekend endeavor; any tips or any recommendations would be great. Thanks for the time.

I don't know who told you it was probably the alternator or why they thought
that, perhaps they had found low voltage due to a dying battery.

Regardless, I see at least two likely problems:

1) The engine turning over by itself is most likely the starter solenoid, it's on
the pass side fender and applies battery power to the starter motor. Replace
that puppy, I'll suggest spending the $30 to get a Motorcraft-brand variant
(might have to get one from a Ford dealer) as the Chinese-made variants have
got a BAD reputation in this forum cuz so many of 'em are bad right outta the
box.

2) The "metal powder all over" underneath the distributor cap - something is
very wrong there and you need to investigate that.

There is also probably a solenoid that removes power from the fuel pump(s) if
it detects low (or no) oil pressure, you might want to investigate that, too.

So, it seems you have multiple things to look at.

I've never heard of a charging system being regulated by a DuraSpark II ignition module....

My suggestions: Begin with the new battery, replace the cables and starter
solenoid at the same time. Of the other things I mentioned, that powder under
the distributor cap is definitely not normal, I'd investigate that, first.
