P or LT

i have a buddy with a 05 f-150 super crew 4x4 he is looking to get the Firestone destination A/T what your opinions on difference of P and LT tires which would wear better/longer? will prob rotate tires every oil change at 3k miles and will have aligned right away. he does not do much towing but once in while will hook up to a trailer.

Passenger car (P) tires would be sufficient for a vehicle that is used as many trucks today are used and that is as a passenger car. If the truck is NEVER used for hauling a considerable load, is NEVER used for towing and NEVER goes off road, passenger car tires of adequate load range will work well.

IF, on the other hand, the truck is used for any or all of the above purposes, use Light Truck (LT) tires.

It's as simple as that.

Agreed. Our Expedition gets P rated, the Super Duty gets LT.

Ironically the Expedition comes with P rated from the factory and ours has the towing package which gives it a GCWR of 14,500 lbs!!! All on passenger tires. The most it has ever towed is an empty 12' utility trailer.

most passenger tires are rated at under 3000# each right? head scratchier to why factory would put P's on that.

Yep. The factory Continentals are 2535 lbs each. Very strange to me.

The Ps on heavier SUVs are most likely XL rated. (44 PSI vs 35 PSI) Due to better materials, 6 plys is no longer necessary for the load rating needed.

My 95 E150 originally came with XL's, I changed to a bigger wheel and LT's and it sucked. I just went back to XL's and the ride is much better. Either way with the bigger wheels and tires I'm way above the factory rating for the tires.

If you don't do heavy hauling on a frequent basis I would get XL's and bump the psi up to the limit if you're going to haul.
