My 2000 ranger xlt 4x4, 3.0 liter, a4od is starting to throw a rod. I got 115,000 miles on it. Half those miles have been pretty hard ones. Logging roads, BIG loads of firewood, pulling boats down to the river, or the sound or east of the mountains. Pretty hard miles even for a Ford! Anyway....My question is, can I put a 4.0 liter, 5 spd manuel/transfer case instead of a 3.0 liter, a4od/transfer case in it? I don't have to have a 5 spd, but I think it would be better for how I work this truck. I like the power gain of the 4.0. I guess an auto tranny would be okay. Any help would be great. I'm kinda stuck here. Feeling pretty bad for killing my truck too.
Doing a full swap is more involved than you think. Personally, I wouldn't attempt it unless it were to be a winter project. Even then I would have second thoughts.
With what you described I second it... F-150.
My B-4000 has a dying tranny And I need a 4x4 for winter, so how did I deal with it?
Yep, an F-150 until I can get the $$$ together to replace the tranny.
Everything has to be changed. wiring computer etc etc. If you are going to do it you better have the entire donor truck. Most anything like this can be done with enough time MONEY patience and a welder.
After some thought, and research.....and listening to your common sense, I'm pretty sold on going to the wreaking yard, dumping 750.00- 1000.00 bucks ,and picking up a used 3 liter. It seems like a faster fix. A rebuild would take awhile, and there is cost involved there as well. Thanks guys... See you around the pool!
