Ok, just heard this tonight. Maybe because I put a muffler on it and can hear more now.
It doesn't do it in 2nd or 3rd gear under load. In 4th gear at, say, 800-1200 RPM, pulling a little hill, or just ANYTHING to put 4th under a hard load at low RPM (3rd gear doesn't do this at any RPM under and load), I hear a squeal or pssssssss noise from the front of my truck.
What do you think this could be? Only in final gear under a good load. Thanks, it's night, and I can't really check much until the morning. Would like some tips on what to check first. Thanks.
My '81 is carbureted, and if I take the air filter housing off and start it, I hear a constant hiss sound from air being pulled into the carb. Yours might be similar, even though it's EFI (assuming this is the vehicle you list in your sig).
Well, it almost has a metallic sound to it. High pitched like that, a squeal, yet a psssss sound. Would the fan clutch make a noise under those conditions easier? It's not technically a muffler, more like a resonator off a 94 Thunderbird 4.6 I had. It was just to quieten it down. But either way, it definitely sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine. Temperature gauge is pretty much on the N of Normal like always.
Oh yeah, and yes, the air filter housing is sealed up and secured in place.
Well, I have the smog pump belt off (has been for a long time) and I have the belt off my A/C compressor (since it wasn't working 2 years ago, anyways).
Thanks for the tips, keep em coming. Only happens in final gear at a lower RPM like 800-1200RPM and pulling a hill at WOT or near WOT. Again, 3rd gear at ANY low RPM at wide open throttle does not ever make the sound. It's not a very loud sound. You kind of have to listen for it. I don't think I ever heard it before because of how loud my exhaust was.
Definitely coming from in front of the truck. I didn't know if a hard load in 4th would make the fan clutch make a weird noise or not. And it won't do it revving or in any gear other than 4th at a very low RPM. 4th gear passed 1200-1300RPM, or 4th gear not under full load at 800-1200RPM does not make the noise.
A bad bearing in a fan clutch *might* make the noise ... but a coolant fan doesn't get stressed when the engine is under a load.
How's your belts? Old and dried out? A little loose? An alternator belt could make some noise at low RPM's when the Alternator is under a "load". Power Steering belt too.
Tighten the belts a little and see if it goes away.
Also ... even though you say the noise is out front ... try this ...
Drive the truck so that its making the noise REAL GOOD ... then lightly touch the clutch pedal ... just take up the free play ... and them maybe just a little more. If the noise changes ... you got a problem in the clutch some wheres ... a bad Throw Out Bearing maybe.
Noises can be tough ... this thing could turn out to be a loose piece of sheet metal vibrating when the drive line gets to a specific RPM.
Or even a loose nut ... letting a washer spin around.
