I started my engine after sitting overnight and it smoked real bad for about 1.5 miles, so bad that traffic was staying back as they either couldn't see or couldn't breath. It is WHITE smoke. I took it to the dealer, they let it sit overnight and tried a cold start and no smoke at all. The only difference was that I had the egr unplugged when it was smoking bad and I plugged it back in when I took it to the dealer. I tried it plugged in and unplugged and it does smoke worse unplugged but hasn't done it as bad since. Very little smoke when the egr is plugged. Can the egr cause smoke? I'm thinking EGR cooler maybe causing this. No mods other than cat and muffler delete. Also under full throttle what boost psi should I except to see?
Thanks
Steve
Good chance it is the EGR cooler - especially if you can verify that there is no diesel smell to it. How much coolant have you lost? You need to be careful about possible hydrolocking.
If you are able to remove the egr valve and park the truck with the rear end jacked up a little, if you come out in the morning and there is coolant in the egr port you have a bad cooler. If that is the case, and I am sure it is, make sure you replace the oil cooler too. Most people have been deleting the EGR but then you will need custom tunes to keep the CEL light off...assuming you have a 04-07 truck.
It starts fine and runs smooth now, however, for a couple of days prior to this smoke show, it was running a little rough when cold and would smooth out once the temp gage started to move. It did start ok though. Lately its been running relatively smooth when cold. I don't recall any abnormal smoke when it was running rough. I just bought this truck but had an 03 that was pretty smokey on start up. This one isn't quite as bad as the 03 so I'm not quite sure what is considered normal. Thanks for the help, by the way.
