Had the stinkin' replacement motor on the stand, oil pan off, and didn't clean the pickup screen or replace the oil pump. Engine is running great, no ticks or knocks, but oil pressure was low on the factory gauge.
After reading on here about how the gauge works, I put in a mech gauge today. Now I'm REALLY bugged because it's still reading 0 at idle. Comes up OK with throttle, but seeing no PSI at idle is bugging me. I don't think it's anything serious or I would have grenaded it by now, but it's gonna drive me nuts.
I'll change the oil tomorrow and see what happens, (hoping I just got some crap in the filter or screwed up the filter when I was putting the motor in) but I'm kicking myself now for getting in a hurry and forgetting to do something so basic while I had it out.
When I swapped my motor last year the screen was full of flat plastic bits. ???
Maybe they were from the original plastic timing gears?
Took a lot of flushing, blowing and shaking to get them all out of my pickup screen.
I'm sorry to say, but it sounds like your pump is worn.
Gonna try something before I tear into the pump. Read the owner's manual (last resort haha) and saw she takes 6 quarts, not 5. It was a couple of quarts down when I checked it before draining it yesterday (it started on quart low - duh) and I'm thinking it might have been leaking around the filter - I didn't notice in my happines to get the motor in but the filter took a beating during dropping it in.
If it works I'm happy, and if it doesn't I can re-use the oil and the filter will still be good. Wish me luck in my trip down denial lane......
Pump is out - going to have to make a drive for the new one, neither store here in town has one. Hopefully have good circulation restored here in a bit
Wow, that only took 4 times as long as I thought it would - what an utterly sucky job that was
Didn't get the new pickup, didn't know it was recommended. I cleaned the snot out of my old one and and reused it. Oh, well, if I have to do it again maybe I'll see if I can beat today's time
She's showing pressure at idle now and higher pressure with some RPMs, which is a good sign. I'll take it for a spin tomorrow and see how it goes.
Ahhh, you sure did - I was in a hurry and missed it. As John Wayne said, life is hard, it's harder when your stupid. My life is pretty hard (laughing).
Maybe I'll get lucky for once on this project and the 45 minutes I spent cleaning the pickup and screen will pay off If not, I should be able to pull the ^%$&* in half the time now that I've done it once........
On an unrlelated subject, I lost an oil pan bolt so just for fun I yanked the whole pan off of the blown motor that came out of the truck while I was getting one off of it. I don't think it's gonna be a rebuilder judging by the jigsaw puzzle piston, lifter, and pushrods that were in the panI now fully understand where the term "grenaded" comes from.......
Really no reason to replace the pickup if you got it clear and its in good shape. Problem is its very hard to get all the pieces out of one.
More importantly how much more junk did you find in the bottom of the pan? and you did clean it out right?
If you found parts of valve seal and your motor smokes for a few minutes when it first starts cold you should pull the valve covers and make sure the oil return holes are clear. Larger parts of seal that won't fit through can and will block those holes restricting the oils flow back down to the oil pan.
Oh yea I agree, I would have just replaced it to rather then spend a bunch of time knocking the **** out of the thing trying to remove all the junk, in the end may not get it all out anyway.
The way its made, makes it difficult to completely clear of all the trash. Not impossible but very difficult and hard on it.
