Hi,looking at this 5 speed truck with 108,000 miles and the 2.3 engine. Is this way underpowered as I've heard?Any comments pro or con on this year and engine.Fellow is asking around $2800 and it has air and is cleanHow does the 4x4 hold up? thanks.
My 97 2wd ranger with 2.3/5 speed is awesomely reliable but frighteningly underpowered. I use it primarily for running around the city and one of my employees has adopted it as his work truck. He's on the road with it a lot and his biggest objection is its inherent inability to climb hills and grades. It lacks in both hp and torque. Have to shift ALOT just to keep up with everyone.
If you plan on driving the interstates often or load it up alot you might want to try to find a V6 powered unit. The gas mileage isn't a whole lot worse and they have decidedly more power.
On an aside though, I plan on keeping mine forever. Its one shortcoming is far outweighed by its relative comfort, reliability and economy. I have over 220k on it and it does not burn a drop of oil.
If you aren't hauling heavy loads and don't need 4x4 and where you live is flat, then go for it. A lotta praise for that engine/trans combo on the forum. A fuel sipper that should give 27mpg on the hwy. I live in hilly, snowy country, so my needs are different.
Just things to factor in to your decision. If you live down south on the coast a 4x4 isn't needed. Where I live a 2.3 2wd gets parked or towed for the winter.
Um rereading your post, a "95 4x4?
