Well what started out being a simple maintenance task has turned into a lot more. The 4 bolts that hold the rear drive shaft on well, two of them the heads are stripped. Whom, ever had this truck before me may have done this but who knows. So, I can get two off and two I can't. So, now I'm at a stand still. I don't have a bolt extractor to take them off and even if I did I don't have new bolts to replace them. Does anyone know if Ed from Y2K parts has any? Really don't want to go to the dealer for them. Or would a part store have them?
On another note while I was crawling around under their I noticed that the companion flange that the bolts screw into has a nice coating of oil build up on it. The rest of the drive shaft is dry. But the gas tank across from it has an oily spray on it which I would expect is coming from the flange. I'm not looking forward to knowing what this may be and what is causing it. Any ideas? I would like to start ordering parts now if I can pin point what it is.
are you sure that you are using the proper wrench/socket to take them off? if it is a six point hex bolt, go get a six point socket (10mm) i believe and try that. if they are the 12 point bolt, use the 12 pt end of a wrench. this happened to me before. i was using a 12 point socket to remove a 6 point bolt and i thought it was stripped. as soon as i got a 6 point socket they all came right out.

Yeah I was using the right one. I noticed they were stripped before I put the wrench to them. I'm just going to get an extractor kit and then buy the strap set from Napa and call it good. Thanks for the advice though.
Go to Napa they have a strap kit. 2 straps and 4 bolts
John
What he said. Get a Dremel or a file and grind the heads off the bolts (if you are careful you can do it without damaging the strap). Once you get the heads off, pop the strap off (or just cut it off if you don't care) and you can grab the threaded part of the bolt with vice grips and turn it out.

I think you are talking about the pinion seal that is leaking.

Sometimes the dealers will fool you on things and prices.Chris(F350-6) and I needed a set of up-pipe bolts and we went all over town.We said, hell let's try the Ford house and they had them and they were not a bad price. This was good because we had the exact bolts now.
I have conquered. Slip joint has been greased and I put a new strap kit on due to the advice of you awesome folks. I purchased some bolt extractors and they did their job removing the old stripped bolts holding the straps.
