I just bought a 76 Chevy C20, 350/4 spd, and replaced the clutch before I get it inspected next week.
Everything went together and I started the truck and put it in gear to test the clutch and the truck would start to roll and everything was normal.
I let the truck run for a bit to circulate the coolant since I drained some, and put away some stuff around the shop to get ready to pull the truck out.
I got in the truck and went to back it out, but I get a rattle or chatter when I push the clutch peddle down. The noise worsens as it gets closer to the floor.
The thing is, the clutch kit got a new clutch, pressure plate, pilot bushing, and throwout bearing, as well as I had the flywheel shaven.
Based on noise troubleshooting, it sounds like the throwout bearing is the issue, but its brand new.
Also, the pressure plate that came from the truck was a three-prong. The new one was a multi-finger diaphragm type, however the tech line for the clutch maker said they are interchangeable.
Any knowledge on this problem? Thanks for the help !
My guess is you need the three finger Borg and Beck style pressure plate. I have a feeling they sold you the wrong clutch kit, the three finger style uses coil springs the ones with a lot of fingers use a diaphragm spring. The three fingered pressure plates are thicker so you throw out bearing will have to sit further back, they also require more travel so the throw out bearing moves more. If you adjust it to where is is just barely off the fingers on the diaphragm pressure plate it will over travel and will most likely tear stuff up.

Did you clean the protective coating off the pressure plate and wipe down the flywheel after having it resurfaced? If not, that is most likely the chatter you have.
It sounds like you may have put the Clutch disc in backwards

hate to admit it but we all fail once in a while.
the hub springs rattle on the flywheel bolt heads when the clutch pedal is depressed if it is in backwards
The clutch went in right for sure - triple checked. Thanks for the suggestions, however after checking all external possibilities I took it around the block before I wanted to tear into it and after topping up the trans and tcase oil after circulating it disappeared - thank god !
If the '76 is like older Chevy's (GMC is different, using hydraulics), the clutch linkage from the pedal down to the throwout arm is extremely sloppy. When doing the job, you could have gotten the linkage slightly out of alignment and that can cause chatter, especially if the engine mounts are worn. A long-shot, but worth checking.
