I have a 97' F250 XLT HD Extra cab short bed 7.3L Diesel with stock 3" leaf springs (4 leaf pack no factory overloads or pads). I have acquired a set of older bolt-on 2 1/2" Hellwig overload springs (3 leaf pack) in good condition from an older Ford truck. I am not looking to increase my current payload just level the truck and reduce sway when i have my camper in the bed.
When I went to get new U-bolts to attach the overload springs the guy at the suspension shop freaked out and said I will totally screw-up my suspension, break the eye bolts and crash my truck. He said bring in my truck and he will re-arch my springs and put in an extra leaf. I am not hauling more than my GVWR, i have having a hard time believing that the overload springs would mess up my suspension. I also don't see a problem putting the 2 1/2" springs on top of my 3" pack, Hellwig springs in current production are 2 1/2" and rated to be put on my 3" suspension.
I could use some advice, I am on a tight budget and $150-$300 for overhauling my springs vs. $50 for new U-bolts and the free overloads is tough to justify. I cant seem to find anybody that has problems with bolt-on overload springs unless they are exceeding their GVWR. I feel like the guy is just trying to get some business.
