I have finally broke down and started replacing my valve cover gaskets on my 85 5.0 FI. I have run into some questions. I am having a problem getting the passenger side cover off. I do not want to hit or bend it too much. Also can someone recommend a good way to remove the gasket material that will not come off? is there a gasket removal product? Last question, it has been at least 20 years since I have done this. Is gasket sealer still needed with these new rubber gaskets? if so where do you put the sealer?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> <o></o> Thanks in advance
I would try to use the rubber gasket only, reason being my old gasket melted and drained down into 2 of the push rod
holes and turn into something like hard black concrete. I had to remove the push rods and chisel it out while running
a shopvac to keep it from falling into the intake.. The shopvac came in very handy keeping things clean.
To remove the gasket i just used a knife to get the main part of gasket than used a wire wheel on my drill to get all the rest off. Than cleaned the inside of covers real good.
I just did mine fairly recently. You do not have to remove the upper intake manifold. You can sneak it out. Sealant is unnecessary for sealing purposes but it is helpful to use a little just to hold the new gasket to the valve cover during installation.
