Air Conditioning

I have a 1995 f 150 with a bit of an a/c problem. The air is cold but when I start moving it seems like it is diverted somewhere else. I can hear the fan still blowing but the air stops coming out for a short time. I can hear something behind the radio that sounds like maybe it is opening and closing. I am guessing there is some kind of a box for lack of a better word that controls where the air should go that is not working. Any info would be helpfull. I am and ex Chevy owner and am new to Ford.

Michael

The "trap" doors are vacuum operated, each door has a little solenoid/diaghram thing.

If one of them goes bad... the door does funky stuff or doesn't do what its supposed to.

Its not going to the floor is it?? My 91 GMC pickup has the same problem sometimes

Whats most likely happening is that the air is coming out the defrost vents. There is probably a vacuum leak. Check the T shaped check valve between the engine and the heater box under the hood. That can fail and cause problems.

Mine has done this a couple times. That valve was the problem the first time or two. The last time was the white vacuum line on the vacuum motor on top of the heater box under the hood. Its in the very corner of the engine bay. Anyway, that line was cracked and deteriorated. I couldn't find that one and had the local shop I use find the vacuum leak. They use a smoke machine and look for where the smoke is comming out.

The white line that subford showed is the same one I was talking about.

Its just a little 3 dollar check valve. I just replaced it.

Here's where the white vacuum line goes to under the dash:

You can see the little junction with the foam wrapped around it. The white line coming in from the bottom of it is the vacuum line shown in Subford's pic. I pulled it out a little so it'd be visible. But it's right behind the passenger kick panel.

Use a hand-held vacuum pump. Apply vacuum to the circuit, see if it holds vacuum. Move the airflow **** on the dash, see if the diverter valve moves. The white hose leading to the valve is a well known cause of this problem as well as cracked vacuum lines leading from the manifold and the little vacuum reservoir attached to the side of the blower/evaporator box. I used my vacuum tester for all the vacuum circuits on my '92 F350. After finding multiple failures I replaced all the vacuum lines. Now my idle is steady at 600RPM and my airflow does not change at every throttle position change.
