Wow it's been a long summer, I have not posted much because I had knee surgery on 6/9 and its been hard getting going again. I think I made need to think about getting rid of the original 3 on the tree that's in my 52 and get something automatic. I have a 1960 approx 223 six in my truck but the original transmission and rear. Any ideas on what kind of automatic would fit? The clutch is just such a hassle with my knee and I want to keep the truck.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I don’t know, but this will bump you back to the top for the night shift. You would think that some of the early 60’s cars and some pickups with the 223 must have come with an automatic trans. Although they might be just a two speed, a C4 would be nice, someone must make a adaptor? Internet search?
That's what I'm thinking too, probably will need to change the rear as well. I just hoping maybe someone has already done this so I don't have to reinvent the wheel!
The C4 is a good choice! The stock "three on the tree" can be easily modified to use with a modern day transmission. I am using mine with a C6 - works like a charm!
There are several Auto-Trans that'll bolt right up.
Ford/Merc-O-Matic Single Range P-R-N-D-L
Ford/Merc-O-Matic Dual Range P-R-N-D2-D-L
Cruise-O-Matic
You'll need an Adapter to get any of the Mid 60's on up Trans to bolt up.
Though the C-4 was Intro'd in '64 & mated w/ the last of the 223 I-6's in the Mid-Size cars & used a one-off Bellhousing for that year only. Good luck finding one though, I've been looking for over 10 years for one.
If you're going to go to the trouble, I'd put in a modern AOD to get cruising RPM's down, better gas mileage, and no issues with finding parts when it needs them. C4's are easy to get parts for, at the moment anyway.

And, of course......if you want the "Big Dog" you can do an E4OD.
