regardless of how common they are rite now if i was you i would go pull all of them that have the factory tach. reason for me saying so is that there is suprisingly one hell of a market for them. those things for instance on ebay go for a easy $80 or more a pop... i only know this because i did the swap in my 95 flareside with the 300 5sp 4x4. i got a deal on mine for about $35. but i mean heck, you should be able to get out of the junkyard with the tach's for about 10-15 bucks a piece, then you clean em up and turn em for a pretty good profit.
if you pull them, note the year truck they came out of. wouldn't hurt to note the engine size aswell. there were different variants of the clusters throughout the 92-96 run, and although they all look the same, they do not all function the same - different plug pin arragements.
If you have a 92-93, you must use a cluster from a 92-93.
That's the only MAJOR revision. If you pick up a cluster for another year, it's absolutely best to get one from the same model year truck.
The swap is easy if you're slow and pay attention. It's harder for autos than it is for standards, because you have to remove the gear indicator cable and then get it hooked back on the pin, which is a big pain.
When you get the cluster, take the front plastic off and remove the speedometer unit. Swap this with the one that's in your new cluster. Since your mileage is stored in the PSOM attached to the speedo, you won't have to have an inspection or a new mileage notorized.
Thanks for all the info. I guess I'll pull some for swap meets and the like. If anyone wants one lmk. I can pull it for cost + shipping + a couple dollars to pull.
