The PS Pump Squeal...

Alright so today pulling into work, i noticed a squeal when i turn the wheel, stationary or moving. I got under the truck had a friend turn the wheel for me, and it is coming from the PS Pump. is it on its way out, or is it just time to do a fluid flush.

yeah, fluid flush time. Put some nice new tranny fluid in there.

ATF gets contaminated pretty easily...water, etc..

That fluid gets a little toasty after a while.

Matt - flush with ATF ASAP, and if you have the $$$, use Mobil1 synthetic ATF. I did mine last weekend and it's been "whisper quiet" ever since.

I agree with everybody above, did my flush today and although I didn't have any noises, the steering and brakes feel smoother. Mobil 1 synthetic, expensive(8.00 a quart x 3) but worth it.

Not trying to hijack this thread but, what is the best way to purge the old fluid out? I need to do mine this weekend. Recently purchased my truck and at 164k miles I think it is on the original fluid as it looks really nasty.

Alright just flushed my PS fluid with new Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF and it is still squealing a little but. Does this mean the pump is going or what....?

Give it some time to work all the air bubbles out of the system. give it another day of driving and then see where you're at.

Did you check the serpentine belt for cracks or wear?? An old belt can squeal. Might also be the the belt tensioner pulley bearing.

Belt looks fine. It does sound a lot better then it did, just at certain points in a turn it will squeal a little.

Give it some time like Lisa said, mine was fine, I had my son turning the wheel and hitting the brakes while I was under the hood so I kept the fluid going in before it could suck air. If not after a while of driving, check what else was mentioned here. At full lock or close to it, you'll get that noise but it should subside when you start turning the wheel again.
