Power Steering Leak

71 F100 Sport Custom. Power steering fluid is dripping of of the pittman arms and seems to be coming out of the gearbox that the sector shaft comes out of to connect to the pittman arms. What to do? Replace seals? Rebuild gearbox? Power steering novice here. Truck has brand new PS pump on it.

You need a gear seal kit. Getting the arm off and into the gear is the real challenge. Once that is done you replace the double seal and put it back together. You should be good to go.

Numberdummy can help with part numbers.

Other than the input seal on top, do not open the top of the gear where the lines go in. I did that once and it was a nightmare to get back together.

Thanks guys. Ok, so I guess I need to figure out whether it's coming from the input side or the sector shaft side... Or should I just go ahead and replace both sets of seals while I'm at it?

Also, can the seals be replaced from underneath the truck or do I have to remove the entire box?

I have replaced them on the truck. The bottom seals are more prone to needing replacement. It was a while back, but I was thinking the kit that I used had both upper & lower seals in it. I think I got it from Advance Auto.

We have an Advance Auto in town... checked their website but there are several kits shown... Not sure which one, if any, is the one I need.

The top kit corresponds to Ford: C5AZ3C538A, which was both the input & sector shaft seal kits. Ford obsoleted this kit in 1973, replaced it with the following:

The middle kit corresponds to Ford: D7AZ3E501B .. Sector Shaft Seal Kit.

The bottom kit corresponds to F3AZ3E502A .. Input Shaft Seal Kit.

Thanks to both of you for your input, but I am still very confused. Please excuse my ignorance, but I need definition on a couple of parts... the input shaft is obviously the one that goes into the front of the gearbox, but what exactly is the SECTOR SHAFT and PITMAN SHAFT? Mine has a small shaft that comes out of the back of the box and connects to horizontal shafts that go across to the wheels. I just need to get my terminology right so I'll at least halfway know what I'm talking about.

John - those two parts you list from Advance are for a 76 and it says they're not available for my 71. ???

Bill - If I'm reading it right, it sounds like C5AZ3C538A is a complete kit that was later spit up by Ford?? Would I be better off just getting that one or how do I know?

I just want to be sure to buy the right thing, cause I'm really in uncharted waters here. Thanks again. Sorry to be a pest.

but what exactly is the SECTOR SHAFT and PITMAN SHAFT? PITMAN ARM. There's no such thing as a Pitman shaft.

Mine has a PITMAN ARM that connects to the sector shaft then connects to the DRAGLINK that go across to the wheels.

In order to remove the Pitman Arm from the sector shaft, you will need a Pitman Arm puller, sometimes refered to as a "Pickle Fork."
This is what Ford did:

C5AZ3C538A was the major seal kit that was obsoleted by Ford in 1973, and replaced by the individual sector shaft (D7AZ3E501B) and input shaft (F3AZ3E502A) seal kits.

These two FORD kits fit: 1969 F100/350's from serial number D96,001 / 1970/96 F100/350 / 1978/96 Bronco / 1965/96 LTD/Crown Vic and etc.

The input shaft fits into the gearbox below the steering column.

The Pitman Arm attaches to the sector shaft.

Some ppl refer to the sector shaft seal kit as the Pitman Arm seal kit, but that's not correct.

Bill is better able to advise on part numbers. As noted you will have to have a pickle fork to access the bottom of the gear.

I remember it being only 3 of those parts used on the bottom.

I'll stop adding to the confusion.

I could be wrong, but it looks to me like the middle kit contains both the sector shaft kit AND the input shaft kit.

NumberDummy, I think you may have slightly missed this one, but it's probably that the aftermarket just duplicated the obsolete kit from Ford. The numbers probably cross-over, but we all know about aftermarket vs. OEM part numbers.

I rebuilt MANY gearboxes in my time, and whenever I got the parts from Ford, it was always two separate kits, like NumberDummy stated. Haven't tried it with aftermarket parts.

Just a tip.....check your sector shaft seal for pits, wear, grooves, etc. I put two seals kits in one box and it still leaked. An old mechanic asked if I checked the shaft. Uh, no. Well there's your problem! It took another seal kit AND a new sector shaft. Live and learn.
