Climbing RPMs and codes

On my '04 Ranger, when I start it, it goes to aroudn 2000 rpms and hangs there. In fact when I let off the clutch, it really takes off w.out me having to even use the pedal! I thought this was just because it was cold but even after driving 20 miles, when I put in the clutch, it stays around 2k and sometimes even wanders toward 3k.

Last night the CEL finally came on so I had the local shop put the computer on it. It gave codes:

P0171 System too lean Bank 1
P0174 System too lean Bank 2

The shop wasnt completely sure what this meant so reset it and wants to see if they come back.

Can anyone here tell me what those codes are and what should be done/replaced? Is this most likely my rpm problem??

Thanks

D

The combination of high idle speed and the engine running lean on both banks would probably indicate a vacuum leak. Check all of the vacuum lines, including the PCV system. You may even be able to hear the leak at idle.

The CEL came back on last night after about 8 miles.

I'll pass this info on to my garage. They did mention possible vacuum issues and now that you mention it, when I walked by it the other day at idle it did sound funny, something I hadnt heard before.

Thanks for the info guys! This is a great site, such a resource!!
