bump, my 06 does it too...I messed with the settings back and forth and got defrost to work so I've left it there for the winter. But need a better fix. Mine seems to work better after it warms up. I read on here somewhere about how to do a cold reset of the switch? Something like disconnect the power to the switch turn on key reconnect with switch on any setting but off? I'll look for it. Also something about running water down the two air intakes in the black cowling below the windshield, to wash leaves dust ect out. And the last thing that seemed to work for me was opening all four front vents, defrost turned on full blast when I did that. There was some mention of a piece foam around the blend door that comes loose, but it requires the dash be pulled.
Shouldn't defrost be the default setting for safety?

older vacuum operated systems defaulted to defrost when vacuum was lost.these new and improved systems don't seem to be repair friendly.I guess I'll have to tear into it before it gets cold.wish someone knew a little more.could be something eary I suppose.

Check post number 97. That's for the TSB on blend door issues.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...he-dash-7.html

The following is from the manual for a 2006. Since you did not tell us what year you have, that's the best I can do.

You may want to purchase a shop manual. It's good to have around. Or go to alldata.com and buy a subscription.

Here's temperature blend door info for a 2006 F-150

<TABLE border=1 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width="70%"><TBODY><TR><TH vAlign=bottom>Item </TH><TH vAlign=bottom>Part Number </TH><TH vAlign=bottom>Description </TH><TR vAlign=top><TD>1 </TD><TD>W701696 </TD><TD>Temperature blend door actuator screw (3 required) </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>2 </TD><TD>19E616 </TD><TD>Temperature blend door actuator </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>3 </TD><TD>W701696 </TD><TD>Heater core cover screw (4 required) </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>4 </TD><TD>— </TD><TD>Heater core cover (part of 19B555) </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>5 </TD><TD>18B539 </TD><TD>Heater core </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>6 </TD><TD>18658 </TD><TD>Dash panel seal </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Removal and Installation

NOTE: If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle.
  1. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing. Heater Core And Evaporator Core Housing.
  1. Remove the dash panel seal from the heater core tubes.
  1. Position the temperature blend door actuator aside.
    1. Remove the 3 temperature blend door actuator screws.
    1. Position the temperature blend door actuator aside.
  1. Remove the heater core cover.
    1. Remove the 4 heater core cover screws.
    1. Remove the heater core cover.
  1. Remove the heater core.
  1. NOTE: The heater core seal must be correctly installed to prevent airflow from bypassing the heater core.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Here's more info...

Removal and Installation
  1. Remove the audio unit. For additional information, refer to Section 415-00 .
  1. While pushing the glove compartment door tab, position the glove compartment downward.
  1. Remove the 3 temperature blend door actuator screws.
  1. Detach the temperature blend door actuator.
  1. Disconnect the temperature blend door actuator electrical connector.

Here's the cold boot for the blend door. Where is the control module? Can you reach the electrical connectors without pulling the dash?

Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) Module and Electronic Manual Temperature Control (EMTC) Module Cold Boot Process
The purpose of the cold boot process is to allow the EATC or EMTC module to re-initialize and calibrate the door actuators. To carry out the cold boot process, follow the steps below.

Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the EATC or EMTC module electrical connectors.
Wait one minute .
Connect the EATC or EMTC module electrical connectors.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Select any position except OFF on the EATC or EMTC module. The EATC or EMTC module will now initialize and calibrate the mode doors. Calibration of the mode doors will take approximately 30 seconds .

The connector numbers are C294A and B for the EMTC. And C228A and B for the EATC. Calibration may not solve the problem if the actuator is toast, or te blend door is busted...

Thanks, looks like the module is the switch. I'll pull that and give the cold boot a try first. Some clarifcation here, the **** that changes the temp from hot to cold works fine. It's the selector switch that changes where the air comes out that isn't working. It'll keep blowing out the front vents when defrost is selected. Then if I leave it there it will after a few miles kick up to the defrost vents and work fine. So my question like deezels is how is the air directed? Is it the temp blend door or does that just change the temp by 'blending' hot with cold?
Thanks!

Ok... Here we go.... This is what directs the flow of air to the panel, defrost, floor and so on.

So there are 2 actuators. the one list above is for the temperature control. The one below is for the actuator that operates the door to select where the air flow goes..

Hope this helps!

<TABLE border=1 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width="70%"><TBODY><TR><TH vAlign=bottom>Item </TH><TH vAlign=bottom>Part Number </TH><TH vAlign=bottom>Description </TH><TR vAlign=top><TD>1 </TD><TD>18B574 </TD><TD>Defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator electrical connector </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>2 </TD><TD>W701696 </TD><TD>Defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator screw (3 required) </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>3 </TD><TD>19E616 </TD><TD>Defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Removal and Installation
  1. NOTE: The defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator can be accessed from underneath the LH side of the instrument panel.
Disconnect the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator electrical connector.
  1. Remove the 3 defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator screws.
  1. Remove the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator.
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

no defrost

Hello all -

New here, found your site, hope you can help! My 2005 F150 has the exact same problem, no defrost or switch from vents, dealer says $800 to fix, needs blend door assy. I pulled ths actuator for the heat/vent/defrost out of the plenum, left the harness plugged in, turned on the key & switched the control from one setting to the other. It moves a tiny bit when you first cycle the key, but thats it. I did the cold reboot, no change. I got a good actuator from a local wrecking yard, tried it - same results. If the "blend door" was bad, then why will the actuator not cycle when removed from the plenum & observed under the dash? Bad control panel? By the way, hot to cold works ok. Help please!

New to Ford Trucks and am so far highly disappointed. I have the same exact problem as those above. Am going to try the cold reset and see if it helps. I should have NEVER gotten rid of my Chevy. Kicking myself ever since.
