Why Did I post somewhere last night wondering if there is a aftermarket manufacture that makes a housing from cast iron? Is it cracked?

Why I think the problem might be the thermostat and might look for a different one..

Why? Are there gaskets sandwiching the thermostat or does the thermostat have a crush ring around the flange?

Why I think it is the thickness of the ring might be the problem, not a very deep relief in the housing
