I'm sure someone may come along and tell you how it may be done.
However my thoughts are more along the line of:
A front end alignment is cheaper out of pocket money than a new single tire. So why not do it right one time and be sure of the correct settings. Who knows, it may end up saving you from purchasing two new front tires in the long run. Plus, must dealers offer a second re-alignment with in 12 months or 12,000 miles.....Kind of a 2 for 1 deal.
Thanks for your replies guys. Here's where I am with this. I'm a believer that I like to learn how to repair my cars and trucks. I found a bad upper ball joint. So I bought new upper and lowers since I had to tear it all down. I found a site with step by step instructions and pics. What a b!tch! This morning I am have them pressed in and should have it back together in a few hours. My tires are already toast so I'll have to replace them anyways. Seems like most of the adjustments are made through the upper ball joint by using washers with degrees/angles, if that makes any sense.
Correct on the camber shims!
If you can change ball joints, you can change the shims.
Only problem,if you don't have a camber gauge, you'll only be guessing.
FEA require special tools that most people don't have.
As posted above,go to a FE shop and get it set correct.(as they will check/set;caster,camber,toe etc..)
Thanks for all your help fellas.
Well I replaced both upper and lower ball joints. PITA, but was a great learning experience. I think I got rather lucky. The camber shims stayed in position perfectly. Whether or not its exact I don't know yet. What I did do (right or wrong), is I used a 2 ft level to make sure that the tire was at least setting level to get an idea if it was straight. Seemed to work ok and now drives down the highway nice and straight.
What I should do know is take it in just to have my camber and toe checked professionally. But until then the tire is no longer leaning and there is no unusal tread wear.
