I'm building a 351w engine to put in a Toyota Landcruiser. (don't ask) I'm installing the Duraspark ignition module and distributor, but was planning on using the newer square coil rather than the normal round one that came with the DSII setup. I know the round coils used around 9 volts at the + input side, but what do the square coils use? I've got one from a 1990 F150, and I thought it used a full 12 volts, but I can't remember and I can't find that info anywhere on this site.
Can anyone tell me for sure how much input voltage there should be on this model of coil?
The square coil does use full battery voltage, 14.5 VDC... but...
the duraspark module will not handle the higher current flow. The DS2 uses a round coil with lower voltage and thus less current flow.
I am using the square coil with the DS2 dist. but i am using a GM 4 pin module.
Thanks for the reply. I was afraid that would be the answer. We spent another evening tonight trying to figure out why it won't start. I kept checking voltage at various points and kept getting strange readings. Given what you said, that would explain it.
Guess we'll go to the store tomorrow and get a new coil and a new DS module. I'm guessing we've blown up the module we were using, since we were putting 12 volts into the coil.
