Look at the waste gate withthe truck off, then start the truck, see if the rod has moved, if it has, then we will get into more diagnostics, but why are you asking? The reason I said we will look into it, I dont remember how much it moves, and I will have to look it up again.
i went out and checked the linkage. i could move a little bit (1/8 of an inch) by hand but no change with the red hose on or off. i did feel the hose and could feel the vacume. do i have to adjust the lincage in or out?? thank you again for the HELP
There is no vacuum on the red hose. The wastegate actuator gets fed pressure from the intake to open the wastegate and limit boost. The pressure is controlled by a solenoid, which is actuated by the PCM.
If the wastgate is stuck closed, you will have high boost under load. If it is stuck open, you will have low boost.
It might help us out if you let us know what it is you are trying to accomplish or diagnose.
well i took it to the local diesel shop and he hooked it to his tester and everything checked out ok but boost. only 6 lbs . our meeting was cut short so he was not able to give me any advice. so how do i get more boost???
What are you getting now? If the waste gate rod is moving, it's likely loose which means there is some drive pressure leaking around the wheel. I don't think there should be ANY play in the rod at all. It should be holding the waste gate closed tightly. Here's what it looks like on the inside, for reference:
first thank you for the responce. So should i look at the solenoid? when i pull the red hose i dont have presure. on the lower red hose that comes from the intake does that feed presure to the solenoid feed presure to waste gate ? Or check the wastgate and linkage where i got a little play (maybe 1/8 of an inch)??
I dont want to cut Joe off, so sorry Joe, but you said everything looked good with the waste gate, and you are only getting 6lbs of boost?? Please start looking around all of your boots, look for oil mist at every connection. If you do see a mist or oil soot, pull the connections and clean, rough up with sand paper, then spray hair spray, reattach. Check the boost again.
You still havent said what it is you were seeing as a problem
Oh yeah, take a flash light, craw around the back of the firewall, look for exhaust leaks on your up pipes as well.
You will only have pressure at the red line when the truck is making boost, and the PCM is telling the solenoid to open the waste gate. You won't feel any pressure there with the truck idling.
thanx Pat. the problem is low boost i will check and do the hair spray trick this weekend to the connections. I also have talked with clay and he also gave me some good advice thank you again.
