Hey i just got my first truck (really my first vehicle)! A 1979 f250. I need to do a carb rebuild but am not sure what engine i have! The original specs from factory say it had a 400 in it. But the guy i bought it from says it has a 360 in it! He was the original owners son and wasnt sure if his dad had ever done an engine swap. So how do i tell which engine i have?
If you have to re-build the carb, identify the carb first. The same carb could have been used on a several engines. Carbs are changed all of time, and if you add the variable of the engine being changed, it is quite possible that the carb is not original anyway.
Every carb has a model number stamped on it.
Do you know what kind of carb you have?
Also count the valve cover bolts. This is the beginning to engine identification.
Awsome! Ill just pull out the carb and check! Another problem its having is that where the throttle cable attaches to the engine, it is spitting out fuel! will my carb rebuild fix this? cuase im getting 4mpg right now and think it should be closer to 9 or 10.
I not real sure about this, but I have a 360 in my truck and on the block it has 352 stamped on it, and I am pretty sure that a 360, 390, and, 352 share the same block. Sorry if I am wrong but I am also new to these trucks as well! Mine is also my first vehicle.
i posted some pics in the albums. the last pic is streight on and directly in the center you can see the part which is leaking fuel. but as far as driving it im only doing 3.5mi a day. so it doesnt really get hot enough to catch fire.

Gasoline can boil, so heat is a smaller enemy than a spark. You have eight potential spark sources that supply a spark faster than you can imagine.
The distributor distributes a spark through 8 wires which could have a leak. One spark and you are on fire.
ok so ive figured it out. it was stock i asked my neigbor whos a ford nut and confirmed everything is stock! so i have a
79 f250 ranger lariat (camper special)
400 v8 with a c6 transmision!
work i plan to do
carb rebuild
new spark plugs wires tips
change oil
transmision fluid filter
charge AC and batterys
Don't forget to change the fuel filter, air filter, PVC, timing, grease ALL fittings, check air pressure, spare too. look the lights over to make sure they are all working.
differential fluid levels, battery terminals, water in battery, radiator fluid level/condition. Look for leaking hoses, oil drips, hard or cracked hoses, brakes/fluid level, etc,etc,......
You know, give it the once over and make ALL necessary corrections, and get to know your truck.
If this is your first vehicle, nice truck. Since it is your first one, get a Chiltons or Haynes manual. Go ahead & change all your fluids. That will help you get acquainted with it. Rear axle seals are important as well as front wheel bearings. Go thru it a little every week end till you are done.
This way you know every thing is in order & you did it yourself.
