I've been searching for quite awhile now and the only info that I've found is that these 8.8 rear ends are 59" 'flange to flange'. Does anybody have any more info, such as 'wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface' and are there differences in different years? I'm actually looking for a late model rear end that is 58" mnting surf. to mntng. surf., 3:73 gears and it doesn't have to be disc brake.
look in the tech articles they have a lot of infomation on different rear ends and lengths, also google ford explorer rear end you should be able to get the specs.
i have an 8.8 out of a 87 crown vic im currently removing the coil spring hardware from that's exactly the same width as the dana 44 in my 53 , i wanna say 55, or 56 inches flange to flange . don't rightly remember . do what im doing and weld some leaf spring perches on , set the pinion angle first , and the oe shock mounts on it are exactly 4 inches lower than the ones for my 53 are , and thats what im lowering the back of it and walla . better gearing , and readily available parts . well igeuss i outta go back out and cuss some more now .....................
Havi, thanx for that info. Went to the pick-a-part today before I read your post & found an Explorer with both wheels off - measured 59 3/4" - wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. Didn't realize the offset of the pinion though. Found 3:73 locking rears to be plentiful.

Sounds like my rear. Is it disc brakes? How much do they want for the rear?
the offset pinion is almost standard fare on ford trucks of any kind . that was fords way of keeping the u joints " moving " and not freezing up . look close and you'll see your oe axle probably is too . mine is in my 53 and in every other ford truck i've ever had . the vic diff i'm putting in isn't so i'm gonna alter the pinion angle slightly to achieve the same thing ford was doing . got the measurements from the vic before i took it out . if i remember it was slightly higher , the angle of the pinion / driveshaft , than my 53's is .
