I pull 8k# but 8.5' W, 13+ H and 33' L with 2000 V10 4.30 4x4. My scan gauge II(when working) reads: 60mph in OD 192-198f and 60mph with OD Off 196- 203(206max) on flat roads with minimal winds. Since my 2000X don't have trans temp gauge i can't tell what temp are for yellow. I also never towed in OD BUT after reading alot on FTE i tried towing in OD and YES now i always tow with OD ON. Motor runs a bit warmer but trans runs cooler.
I have had the same problem before. What I have noticed is that if the RPM's go above 3000 for an extended period of time the trans will get hot. I always stay under 3000 RPM's and never have a problem, no change in temp at all. There is some time I go slightly above 3000 on steep hills but for short period.

Heck, if I tried to stay under 3000 RPM thenI wouldn't go anywhere, but we constantly tow a 12,000 lbs trailer. That might have something to do with it...
Hey guys, i recently purchased the Edge Insight for my truck. Gives you a lot of info including trans temp. I got the Insight because of the optional pyro probe/EGT for my '06 6.0 F-250. If you've got a gas motor though, I understand that the ScanGauge II is another good option for 1/2 the price. Plugs into your OBD-II port. Definitely worthwhile investment as you can see actual temps and not have to guess. Also, if your temps are rising you'll pick it up a lot sooner. FWIW, I haven't seen tranny temps over 165* and that's pulling about 8000lbs in 90* temps this summer.
Thanks guys! I know I was just slightly over 3000rpm in 3rd, probably 3200! once I slowed the trans temp came down to normal. sounds as if it is just normal operation with towing an 11.5 ft tall, 9000lb trailer into high head winds! I know Joe has some type of gauge mounted in a gauge pillar pod that can read all sorts of info and give you engine codes if you have a check engine light on. I`de like to get that if possible?

Wow, my gasser will run 160-165 not pulling according to my scan gauge 11. Pulling 6,000 lbs on flat terrain in Minnesota, I am running 190-205. I keep reading that the tranny works harder in OD. I find that my tranny temp rises 3-4 degrees when I lock the OD out. I'm a little worried at what I might see for temps next summer going through Montana.
On this same note - what is the temperature threshold where the transmission starts to get damaged? 230-250? I have a ISSPro Trans Temp gauge (mechanical), but I have never seen actual temperatures above 200 degrees on the gauge - which does not cause the stupid trans gauge in the dash to move from normal.
Is there a temperature maximum we should never surpass?? A temperature where we shut it down or throw it in nuetral??
