Can anyone help me identify what these two leads are for on a '96 F-250 with the 4.9 inline 6? The two leads are circled in yellow in the photo and they both come from a common point in the engine wiring harness just downstream from the distributor, which is circled in green.
I just bought the truck and am still working on getting it running right. I have the distributor replaced, and suspect that I may need to replace the alternator due to the battery light staying on (the old battery was weak and I already put a new battery in).
What colours are the wires? I can't see them very well.
EDIT: Looks like one wire is a red/yellow, and that the lead is capped off. If so, that's for your dual fuel tanks, which I am guessing you don't have and why its capped.
I have the dual tanks, and in fact, am changing the rear tank tomorrow because it leaks. I found a powder coated 19 gallon rear tank on eBay for $80, including shipping.
The inside of both of the leads are red and neither of them are capped.
OK I'm back - I was underneath the truck all day yesterday changing out the rear tank - it wasn't fun, but I got it.
Anyway, here are the details on the wires., One of the leads is a round, four-pin connector. It has two wires coming into it. One wire is green with a red stripe, and the other is red with a yellow stripe.
The other connector is rectangular and also has two wires coming into it. One wire is grey and the other is black.
Searched around... found the green/red wire could be for... brake warning indicator (cruise control), an alternator connection (doubtful since you don't have charging issues) or possibly the daytime running light module (do you have them?).
The red/yellow seems more elusive. It's fuel relay related or connected to your headlight dimmer switch.
It makes me think that it should go to a DRL module. Subford should be able to clarify.
The Black & Grey seems like a connection to the A/C compressor clutch. Was A/C included on your truck?

Be sure and check the battery voltage directly when running, it should be 14-15v. If that green/red wire to the alternator is not connected, you would not be charging at all.
The previous owner may have even changed the alternator thinking that it was the reason for not charging. You're sure there is no other plug hiding which should fit?
The yellow/red wire I still cannot find. I have a 91 harness, a bit different from yours.
The A/C plug has 2 prongs or whatever with 2 wires and the plug has a little raised notch on it. So, I think that would be the easiest way to tell if its the A/C one.
