Diesel Expedition
Buddy of mine works for International who will be making the (I think) 3.0L oil burner. Word from him is that it is shelved for now. Not sure when it will be a go again. I think that was going to be in V-6 form?!?! I thought diesels rattled enough as it is. A V6 will shake itself to death, won't it??

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Nov-02 AT 05:27 PM (EST)]Depends on the angle of the "V". The formula for determining the optimal angle for the cylinder banks is 720/number of cylinders, so:
4 cylinder = 720/4 or 180 degrees (as in old VW Beetles, Porsches and Subarus)
6 cylinder = 720/6 or 120 degrees (I think a few older Italian cars have this, a tough engine to fit under the hood of a car, so most smooth V6's are 60 degrees, some 90 degrees are out there with a little balancing help)
8 cylinder = 720/8 or 90 degrees (Virtually all American V8's)
12 cylinder = 720/12 or 60 degrees

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Nov-02 AT 03:51 PM (EST)]Word I get is "don't look for the 'Baby PSD' (4.5L V-6) before 2006"
They say that it's developed, tested & ready but the 'business plan' isn't right, read: not a substaintial enough market to warrent the cost. I am told that it would add $2-$3 to the cost of production and would require a $3k-$4k option price. While the 6.0L PSD accounts for 90% of SuperDuty sales, they estimate that the 'Baby PSD' would account for less then 5-10% of the F150 / Expy sales in this market environment at best.
All this could change should the price of fuel rise dramatically.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Nov-02 AT 09:44 PM (EST)]I was also told by a source inside Ford that the 4.5L PSD was on hold till 2007. He stated they had some minor vibration issues that needed to be worked out. They were also working on the next tier of emissions, which is needs to be met by '07.
