1977 f 250 power steering

I have a 77 f250 I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way of getting rid of the power assist cylinder set up and putting on a power stering box?

What's wrong with you power assist (laughs) the 78/79 p/s swap is a popular one, do a search and there's numerous detailed threads on this very topic.

As a side note: i'll take your old power assist if you want to part with it.

They can be rebuilt but are very expensive to do so, most guys just do the 78/79 p/s swap when it comes to that.

Yep, you need to cut the weld on the cylinder in order to rebuild it (not one of Fords best ideas).

This is how I did mine. I used a gear box from a 78/79 F250 4x4 along with the drag link. A little fabrication work, but works pretty good. I ditched the stock steering rod and went a Borgeson steering rod that is adjustable and much better than stock. A few other things I had to do was notch out the radiator support a bit to clear the gearbox. The power steering pump pulley comes close to the gearbox, but works.

You do some great work there Buck.

I went a slightly different direction, and used a Saginaw box. Many boxes are, or have been used, and some are less desirable than others. Three bolt 1/2 ton 4x4 boxes have been used as have the 2wd boxes. Unfortunately the 2wd box has such a long sector, and has some funky angle it is just not a very good box for this upgrade. Another variable is crossover steering, and this 2wd box is just useless.

If fab skills are not up to cutting a frame / crossmember, you can add the three bolt box donated form a 78/9 F150 or full size Bronco right to theoutside of the frame, but this requires some sort of crossover steering or inverted "T" at a minimum.

Some pics of the Saginaw:

Just so you don't pass out when you get the price from Green Sales....... they're $550 plus $200 core charge.

I think I'll just stay with the piece of cardboard on the garage floor to catch the drips.
