I have the second (replaced the factory at 83k)dual mass flywheel going bad at 173k. I have been internent shopping and found a LUk solid flywheel/clutch combo. Does anyone have any comments on quality?
I put a Luk SMF and clutch in about 35K ago and love it...I've seen that lots of people complain about the noise of SMF's, mine is very quiet..I have no regrets and would do it again..
You should also be able to go with a 97-98 or newer stock single mass flywheel for a good bit cheaper. I have a 1997 F450 that has a single mass but I think the F250 and F350 didn't switch till 1998? I'm not positive about those dates but a single mass could probable be picked up at a junk yard for less than $100.
They come apart, which isn't to good. So they rattle.
Would they make these noises when driving or just during start up and shutdown? Because when i shut my truck off it stops the motor real fast and rattles and sounds like crap. It is quite embarrassing.
I have had a luk sing mass flywheel in my truck for about 85000 miles. i just put the second clutch on it about 2500 miles ago. I love it. i wouldnt switch back for anything. the clutch coulda lasted longer but i was 17 when i put it on and not very nice to it overall its pretty quiet to me
I'm running Luk in my dump truck, I like it and it works well. A little extra noise, but then again the trans is about shot. After reading other posts I'm looking at Valiar when my 97 needs one.
The LUK is a great clutch, I ran one years ago and it was great. Just couldn't hold much power. But like mentioned above, Valair is the only way I go now. Awsome clutches, second to none customer service. Check'em out. www.valairinc.com/performance . You can call them and talk to Dan or Kevin and tell them Cody from Death Row Diesel sent you, they will knock a bunch off the price of a clutch set up. Either way you can't go wrong, but I far prefer the Valair.
As far as what the DMF does when it's on the way out. Yes, when you turn the truck off, it will rattle like hell. And on start up too. I also found that they will rattle under quick throttle situations too.
And yes, a SMF will be a little more noise. Most can be solved by adding a little more fluid to the tranny. There have been some that can't cure the noise for one reason or another and it's unacceptable. And in each one of those cases that it was a Valair clutch, Dan and Kevin have bent over backwards to try and get the problem solved. One case that's actually on going in our forum, I believe it's SHOpar that keeps having noise problems with his Valair. I know personally that Dan and the Valair guys are looking at every concievable angle to get his problem solved. You won't get that kind of service from LUK, or any other clutch builder. Hope that helps man.
Hey thanks to all that jumped on here. On those dual mass flywheels, not only are they noisy but it's hard to get in gear. This is exactly what the old one did and when we opened her up there were pieces missing(springs and such) and we never found them. Must have went out the exhaust.
I will check out the Valair web site and call tomorrow.
When my DMF went out it would shake the truck like I had a 20 pound weight stuck in the tire. It was crazy feeling. Mine didn't make much noise but would vibrate real bad every now and then. When I took it off almost half of the ball from the ball bearing were missing. Where did they go? Who knows but when all the ***** would collect on one side it would vibrate like crazy. Sometimes it would run normal when the ***** got spaced out real good.
P.S. About the stock SMF. It may be available in 450 but was not put in 250 or 350's at all. There also was not a such thing as a '98 250 or 350. They stopped the OBS in '97 and started the SD in "99. The only 250 that was made in '98 was a light duty, which was nothing more than a hopped up 150. None were diesels and talk about ugly!!!!

Thanks for that info. Would a 99 to 03 single mass flywheel/ clutch/ pressure plate combo work? Here is a picture of the engine from my f450/ f super-duty. The single mass flywheel might not be stock but it was on there when I got it. With 250,000 miles plus, the dual mass could have been replaced a long time ago.
