po299 low boost code

is this a classic case of unison ring starting to stick?. i got the cel light about a month ago, re-set the light the poor mans way and it didnt come back on until today when towing my boat.i was climbing a long moderate grade and the cel light came on. hooked up my code reader and got a low boost code, but when i was climbing another hill i heard a couple turbo farts go off, so that got me thinking that maybe the ring is starting to stick. anyone else have this kind of issue?.it's an 04 with 117,000 miles on it.

If the truck is running OK otherwise, I'd clean the EGR, EBP sensor and tube, and the turbo, because it sounds like sticking turbo veins to me also.

it seems to run o.k.. maybe a little low on power, but real slight if any.didnt get any smoke at all out of it when pulling the hills i did.also sounds like the turbo is spooling o.k..when the veins stick and you get a cel light does the turbo go into a full boost mode to get you home?.seems if it was a low boost i wouldnt have heard the turbo huffing back through the air cleaner, but maybe?.thanks for the advice, i'll do like you say and give 'er a good cleaning.

I got the same code and the truck was running fine. Took it to the dealer anyway and they replaced the turbo. Said it was coked up. Never did feel a diff. be4 or after.

got the turbo out (which was relatively easy) and apart. didnt look to bad, but i couldnt move the unison ring by hand. took a little coaxing to get it to rotate.hopefully will get it cleaned and in by thursday. is there a bleeding procedure for the oil filled actuator i need to know about?, or is it just a fire up and go type thing. all the turbos ive done in the past i always fill the oil pressure side of the turbo with oil before start-up.

No bleeding required. The VGT makes moving the unison ring a little stiff, but unhooked it should slide relatively easy. Check the tech folder for a GOOD cleaning procedure from Ford Doctors DTS.

Yes your truck may seem to run ok, but if you dont have a boost guage its good to install one. Mine was overboosting to 38-45psi...BAD NEWS. It could cause HG issues with overboosting. Some see it on the opposite end with an under boost issue also.

So if you dont have an 05-07 truck get a boost guage so you can keep an eye on it.

i'll get one. another wierd thing is that both times i've gotten the cel there was just a touch of puking around the filler cap. but only those two times.no fan coming on or anything to suggest it was overheating, and its not using water like it did when my cooler went bad. will low boost cause exhaust temps to climb, in turn boiling the water in the cooler?.

Nah,

Your OK in my book. I only saw boost reading like that while climbing grades so if you have a guage and can monitor it you may never have a problem. As soon as I saw 40 psi I kept a real close eye on the EGT's and boost psi. while driving.

Its a feasable explanation but more likely the care that it overboosted at some point and now it lifts the heads. Without having a boost guage its unknow what the actual boost readings are, therefore you dont really know if its overboosting or not. Did you replace the resivoir cap with the updated one that FORD has out. I read a thread a bit ago about how it helped a guy with that issue. Just a thought before we think the worst.

i havent changed the cap yet, but i will.do you get a cel for an over boost condition?. i've pulled the boat 2 other times with no problems at all. i was surprised to get the low boost code, i thought for sure it wouldv'e been an egr code of some kind.

That low boost code could be caused by an overboost condition. So yes its important to get a boost guage and keep an eye on it.
