I'm trying desperately to get the steering wheel off of a 1963 f100 to work on the turn signal.
Today i went out with a steering wheel puller that i rented. I screwed it into the puller holes and started to turn it. it started to get tight, so I slowly turned it expecting it to pop right off.
It did not pop right off, instead it pulled/stripped the two screws out of the holes and now both the holes on the steering wheel and the bolts themselves are stripped. Of course now that they are stripped i cant get the wheel off.
Another problem is that the big screw in the center (the one that you turn to pull the wheel off) pushed down on the center so hard that it disfigured it and now i cant get the nut back on. So now its kind of a double whammie because i cant get the wheel off, but at the same time i cant get the nut back on.
Well you have a mess now. Advice is a little to late. Hopefully you can drill and tap two new holes. If you can try this.
1. Put a flat washer over the top of the steering shaft first, and let the puller push on that.
2. When you tighten down on the main screw on the puller only do it until you start to feel resistance. Then smack the top of the screw with a good sized hammer. The impact will help loosen it. Tighten the screw again until you feel resistance, Smack it again. Keep working the screw down and smacking it.
3. When and if you get the wheel off you might be able to run a die over it and salvage the threads.
Yah, i did a serch to find out if i could get my 66's steering wheel off with out using a puller. I did it fine, you may be able to get your wheel off the same way. What you do is back the center nut off untill it is flush with the top of the center. Take a hammer and tap on it being sure to hit it square to avoid messing up the threads.(hmmmm sorry i guess you can skip the nut step, sorry i should have read it all sooner) Well anyways while you are hitting it (you need to hit it with some force) pull on the steering wheel. It took me maybe 10 hit with the hammer until it poped off. That may help you get the steering wheel off. good luck with getting the nut back on.
thanks for the help. i was able to drill out the stripped threads and tap new bigger ones. i got it off and was also able to get the center nut back on.
The problem was that i tried using coerce threaded bolts in the fine threaded steering wheel. i now know not to do that...
