I found a 55 f100 that I will be picking up and it comes with a y block that is in a seperate cutoff front frame stub and the engine looks to be in original condition and was reported to be running a year ago (not holding my breath though). not knowing much about y blocks, can someone tell me what the y block engine options were for 55? is there a following for these engines? Point me in the right direction please!

Lots of people still run Y blocks. I would suggest you also scroll down to the Y block section in the engine forums.
1955 I believe was 239 Y-block. Later years were 272 and 292. If you have the front frame section do you know what year its from. You should check the Y-block section for casting numbers. If the frame is without fenders then you should be able to find/read them. Kurt G. Y-blocks rule.
no expert , but the base one was a 239 , and there was a larger one for the bigger stuff . don't know for sure , and i had a 239 in my 55 , but have the understanding that the 239 had a lot of weird one off stuff onto itself . im not saying it's a bad motor but i think i'd find a more common 292, or 272 , good luck finding a 312 , and run one of them as the parts and motors seem to still be fairly plentiful . got a 292 sitting around here again . had a 239 , 272 a 292 , and so forth sitting here once before sold it all ......
Rick, Your reply piqued my interest. I'm curious what factors influenced your decision to stick with the Y-block and go with the adapter and the E4OD? My 53 f100 has a 292/312 (not sure which) and I like the simplicity of it, but I hate the 3-speed, and the Bentsten (sp?) adapter is pretty spendy! I had been looking for a 351/aod to go in it but now you have me thinking about keeping the Y.Please elaborate.
