Swapping to auto is costly, I would keep the 5spd over a swap, but that's just me doing a cash numbers crunch on a swap to auto for a 97 Ford. Manual Transmissions are a lot cheaper to rebuild than the automatics. Dont get me wrong I like my automatic, but several people really like the standards. Something to think strongly about before diving into a swap.
If you have more Q on this Mark knows his stuff on the trannies.

The auto trans is the weak link in the drivetrain on our trucks. Why would you want to change the better of the two transmissions out for the inferior one?
Plus, with all the torque the Powerstroke has, the 5 speed is super easy to drive, even for a beginner.
If you do decide to swap, There is a company that makes a standalone computer to control an E4OD. I found it in a search here one time when I was thinking about this swap myself and It ran about $400.
Found the Link. It looks like its $400 for the computer and $150 for the harness. BTW, Imight pick up that 5 speed from you if the price is right. I'd have a good drive from middle GA.
