I was seeing up to 227*+ with the 203* stat. Now, it's ~220* after a hard run. Averaging around no more than 200* normally.

Wow! I haven't seen mine over the 'stat temp. Even in the summer when it was over 100 degrees. Are you talking about temps read by the PCM/AE or from somewhere else?

I consistently see oil temps 20-30*above water temp when the engine is actually working (towing), it remains close to water temp running empty.

The default programming is to assume oil temp of 212*f under operating conditions if the sensor is out of range.

Meant to say ~200*. This was read with my AE when I data logged in the 140 Extreme tune. I looked back at the data logs and it cooled down to ~190* when cruising back home.

Some of the higher end VW/Audis have factory installed engine oil temp gauges.
I've personally owned three of them over the years.
Even in the dead of winter the EOT runs 210-230 depending on engine load.
Going over a mountain pass will always warm up the oil.
Just cruising the interstate will put it at around 220.
I've tried installing a cooler thermostat on one of them and it made no difference, which was very surprising to me.

Dan, that makes sense if you think about it. once the T/stat is open, it doesn't matter what temp its set for, its open. a 175 is just as open as a 200. the set temp only controls the opening or warm up temps. If I remember right the 192 t/stat begins to open around 175, the 203 opens around 185. it shouldn't affect the operating temp once either one of them is open.
this of course is just my limited opinion

The last time I was down in Holtville at JW's place, he told me he'd done some comparison testing on the 203 versus the 195 thermo's, and the 203's caused higher than desireable engine oil temps.

I can second this based on some testing as well..

No 203* T-Stat for me! In addition to that, big oil trucks tend to run a little hotter oil temps to begin with.

So what are desirable oil temperatures, and what's too hot?

Oil temps should be very close to your coolant temps.. Oil should be running 195-200*.

I was seeing 240* temps just driving unloaded!

I have been running the 203 for years, no problems, i also run Evans with no pressure, theres a big difference between Evans and antifreeze. With the cooling system on these trucks that hold 8 gallons the 203 stat is no problem. JMOP.

Don't know if I mentioned it earlier in the thread but I got my oil reading temps from my trip cluster test, said it was 233* running normal. Might take mine out and do the stove top water test, curious now.

DOH!! Thats pretty high.

You could also get a thermal temp gun and shoot the resivour to see if it matches your EOT sensor's reading on the AE
