I have a 1980 f700 370 engine with a 2 barrel carb. I would like to know if a edelbrock performer 4 barrel intake that fits a 351m fit this engine and what else is interchangable. Thanks in advance Joe
No the "M" intake will not fit. You need a intake for a 429/460 and a 600CFM carb. 370's with a 2bbl are generally considered "DOGS" the addition of a 4bbl really wakes them up. I had a 370 in my service truck for a while a 81 F700 5spd - 2spd adding a 4bbl really helped . One thing to remember don't over rev that engine 3800-4000 RPMS are MAX!!! Also don't put too big a carb on it 650CFM is plenty , vacuum secondarys work best. I used a cast iron factory intake with a 1" 4hole spacer to help with heat transfer.
ok will replace two barrel carb and intake with 4 barrel edelbrock ( I have already) and 4 barrel intake ( I will get). Is there anything else besides a 429 or 460 that I can do. Like change camshaft, timing gears and chain? Any help is greatful since the engine is on an engine stand. Thanks
The ports on 370-429-460 carburated intakes are the same, the intakes interchange. The exception is the CJ intake , the ports are different. The later fuel injection intakes and heads only match themselves. The Edelbrock carb will work OK try to use a spacer to raise the carb and help with heat. One or two inch 4 hole works best. Low restriction dual exhaust helps. The stock cam works OK , too big a cam kills bottom end. The stock timing chain should be OK , it should be a non retarded setup.
I drained the oil on my 370 (casting #D9TE-BB) and found some hard plastic and rubber pieces. I thought it might of been the cam gear, but I was told they use a double roller with steel gears so I took the engine apart and found alot of plastic pieces all over. I guess it could of been there from a previous ploblem. Now this is what I have. The ring groove in the cyl's will hold your finger nail. I want to rebuild it now so can this engine be bored to make a 429 to take advantage of a higher compression piston? I also would like to put in a different cam for more power any ideas on what brand and which ones? It will be going in a 78 f700 dump truck. I will be putting a four barrel intake on this with a dual exhaust. I beleive the comp ratio was 8 to 1 I would like to raise that up. If I cant bore to a 429 where can I get a higher compression pistion for the 370? I really like this forum thanks guys.
The idea of lower compression in heavy truck engines is to avoid pinging and premature piston failure. The design of heavy truck engines take into account that they will spend most of there time loaded and under adverse conditions. Lower compression and small ports in the heads lets these engines to run at reduced RPM's and be happy. Small ports = higher intake velocity. The camshaft profiles are designed for max torque at lower engine speeds and are maxed out at 4000rpms or so. This design lets the engines sweet spot right around 2500-3000r's. I have used the desktop dyno to run different cam profiles in these low compression engines and found the stock setup is hard to beat for torque in the engines usable rpm range. The best gain in torque is gotten by inceasing the cubic inches -- SIZE MATTERS. The difference between a 370 and a 429 is nite and day. I put a 460 in my 81 F700 and was very satisfied with the results .
1979 f700 370ci in, I need the valve face grinding angle, the valve seat grinding angle, and the valve stem height after it is in the head and the valves and seats have been ground. I have to bore so is a certain piston better? I know I asked this already but since I'm overhauling advice on cam kits and timing kits would sure help me.
Thanks Joe
