86 2.9 no start
86 2.9 no start
was just givin an 86 bII 2.9 auto, cranks but no fire, checked for spark, sparks fine, poured fuel into intake, starts and runs as long as i feed it, fuel pressure to the rail, swapped pcu to no avail, ideas?
Maybe?
I think you may have a bad Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). If you removed the air intake hose from the throttle body and opened the throttle by hand to pour the gas in and it runs then there's a really good chance. If it's bad instead of telling the pcm you'r at idle it's not giving it a signal at all in which case it wont run because it shuts down the entire starting sequence. If it's NOT the TPS then just like the other guy said it's very possible your' injectors are'nt firing probably because of a short/break or a bad connector in the main wiring harness. I have an '88 BII and have found over the years that my Repair Manual and a cheap Voltmeter has saved me a BUNCH of time and money. After a vehicle like the BII gets over 15-20 years old the wiring tends to get corroded and brittle and the connectors get loose and corroded as well. I've practically rewired my entire electrical system just these past 4-5 years because of it. But, i think the BII is one fine Truck and i think is worth it.
A failed TPS won't keep the injectors from firing but a bad TFI or a bad stator could.
It could also be a computer problem but that is unlikely, computers rarely fail.
Does the fuel pump run for a couple seconds when the key is turned to "run" and then stop? (if it does the computer is likely just fine, not concrete proof no but a good sign)
Does it have 40psi at the fuel rail after the fuel pumps have cycled?
You have two fuel pumps on that "86" , low pressure pump in the tank, high pressure pump on the frame rail, either one failed could cause a no start condition. Not enough fuel pressure to start.
Is there 12v+ to the red wire at the injectors with the key in the start and run positions?
Using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope, put the handle to your ear with the blade end on a injector, do the injectors "click" rapidly when turning the motor over attempting to start it? If so you likely just have a fuel delivery problem IE; clogged filter or failed fuel pump.
