My '78 has loose steering...My dad told me that it was the steering column(He had it checked by a mechanic at work). So would all I need to find is a column with P/S then swap them?
I dont want to dissagree with a father, as fathers know best, but I cant see how mechanically the column could be responsible for loose steering. The steering column is just a solid shaft that provides a connection between the steering wheell and the steering shaft, or the steering box if it is 2wd.
If you have a 2wd truck the steering column attached directly to the steering box through a vibration isolator called a rag joint. After years of uses this rubber rag joint ecomes aturated with oils, or just plain dries out and detreriorates. This will cause a loose condition and will appear that the column is not functioning properly.
This rag joint is replaceable and can be purchased at most auto supply houses. Installation will require a couple of wrenches and a grinder to seperate the halves. Two rivets will have to be cut. Simple bolts can be installed to put the new one together.
If you have a 4wd, the process is the same, only there is a steering shaft that connects between the box (front mounted) and the column.
