this only happens when i take off quickly and pop the clutch rather hard and not when i ease it out, anyway it makes a big clank noise that doesnt sound healthy, kind of sounds like its coming from the front of the drive shaft just coming out of the transfer case? any ideas? does this sound common?
My U-joint went bad on the rear of the rear drive shaft and when I tried accelerating it would quite often clunk. It came on quite quickly. Turns out that 3/4 bearings were dried up and started to rotate and dig in and disintegrated.
Get underneath and try turning the drive shaft and attempt to move the u joints side to side and u and down. That should show you if it's the u joints.
It's common if you abuse your drive line and don't lube it ever.
I'd like to add to the others that you need to park the truck and if your on a level spot, put the truck in neutral before you try to move the drive shaft looking for bad u joints. If there isn't a level place to check the drive shaft, block the wheels, 2 would be enough. Either way if the truck isn't in neutral the weight of the truck will put the driveshaft in a bind and can make it feel like the ujoints are ok.
It could also be loose rear leaf spring to axle U bolts. This is especially true if there are crappy lift blocks installed. I would suspect the U joints too though.
Thats really fairly easy. You need to remove the driveshaft. Theres about 4 bolts where it attaches to the rear axle. Then it just slides out of the back of the transmission.
I have always marked the position of the driveshaft, the yoke, and the mounting flange etc with tape so I can put it back together just like it was to avoid vibration issues from being out of balance.
You will need a pair of needle nose pliers for the e clips.
