Today an old friend was over and he was telling me about a motor and trans he had and asked if I wanted them for my truck. The problem is I would be getting rid of the Y-block and the motor is in arizona. He says the motor is a 428 cj out of 68 t-bird. He claims car runs and drives. Since it sounds like it would be free I'm thinking on doin it. Whats your opinions. Kurt G,
oh no you shouldnt do that ! tell me where it is exactly and i'll go remove the offending fe before you do something you might enjoy !!!!!!!!!! hey even if ya don't replace the y block with it , it gives you an excuse to find another old truck in need of a driveline !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here let me open the cash register and let you watch your cheep motor swap out fly away:
New motor mounts ($200); Custom exhaust ($1000); Frame boxing ($300); Linkages and throttle ($100); transmission and rear end (may be use those out of the "Bird"); disc brakes ($500); drive shaft ($100) new transmission mount ($200); and reinforced front springs ($250) (that is if you don't go with an IFS @ $1850).
Don't get caught up in the low cost of the engine as opposed to the amount of money it's going to take you to adapt it and the strengthening youwill need to add to the truck to handle the new torque and HP.
I'd do the FE as well, but that's because I like FEs more than Y-blocks - but the conversion will not be cheap if that's what you are thinking.
From what I was told the car either has or will be taken apart and sold for parts. I do love the way the Y sounds but as pointed out free items can still cost a lot. When it comes to the front end I guy I work with has an old new yorker with a v8 in it. he has said I can have car if I haul it off. No title does not run. Maybe the Y-blocks don't rule, but the Y does soung good with glass packs. Kurt G,
My buddy's dad will be heading down to their winter home in Roswell pretty soon. They haul a car carrier each way, so feel free to put that Tbird on there. His Landcruiser can wait another year.
Well..as Julie wisely points out..some major mods will need to be done to make things work out safely..that said ..I'd go for door #1 and the CJ....who dosen't like more power...even if it's just hanging on an engine stand in the corner of the shop.........
428 CJ? For free? Seriously? I wouldn't even think twice about picking it up, figure out if you want to put it in your truck later, pounce on that deal now!
Even if that engine was seized it still be worth picking up!
yep get it !!!! the only reason i wasnt gonna have to modify the frame on my f350 for one is it has freaking bridge steel girders for frame rails { eventually boxed it anyway for appearance and i tend to be a worry wart bout safety } . the half ton on a 74 frame got boxed as it got cut and shortened and although the frame donor was an oe fe truck i know how it woulda got driven had it been done ....................... may drive the 53 slow but give me something with a lil' pep and the dirt track racer comes outta the wood work in me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ford FE 428 C.I. COBRA JET engine cool factor: priceless...
no jim the ginormous amounts of torque to blow the rear tires into oblivion is the cool part ! plus the ability like julie's to devour the lil' turds in their honda's with a two ton , ain't no way it's that fast , truck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Speaking from the point of view of someone running 500 cubic inches of Cadillac power I can say that there is nothing quite like the gadzillion foot pounds of torque that a big block will give ya
