Verify that the noise if from the transmission before going much further. An easy check is to temporarily remove the fan belt and run the engine. If the noise goes away, it is caused by a belt-driven accessory.
This is a dandy time to replace the fan belt since it is probably close to being due.

The pump is in the front of the trans behind the torque converter. I haven't worked on them for a long time but they used to be replacable by just unbolting from the front. Pick the brain of your local tranny shop for a little more info.
