Someone correct me if I'm wrong however I believe the 97-00 were prone to the plug blowout problem and the piston slap. In my 99 I've experienced both of these which I believe were corrected in 01. If so I'd have to say the 01 is better.

I bought my 2000 EXPO in 2005 with 58,XXX miles on it. It drives like a dream and has never had a problem. I got my first code last week, it was an IAC issue (P1507 I believe). Removed it, cleaned it, changed the oil, passed CA smog with 0 emissions. It actually runs stronger and better now that the IAC is clean. Don't know of any issues as mentioned. It's a Ford, you're good to go!
