What is the difference between the Distributor in pics 1 and 3? Is one better than the other?
Picture 1 and 2 are of an engine I picked up I was told is a 429(not that that matters). Picture 3 is a 429. not familiar with big blocks and it has me wondering.....The engine in the truck is a rebuid and the other was rebuilt I was told 6000 miles ago, I want to stick it in my other rig....Thanks
the electronic dist will swap with the points dist but you also have to have the control box for the electronic dist for it to work. they are a dime a dozen at wrecking yards or from your local parts store. just ask for ignition control box for some mid 70's 460 truck or LTD. also the wiring is a bit different between the two as to how the box is wired to the dist and to the ignition switch. it is pretty simple to do and figure out.
i can probably find a wiring diagram to send to you if you need that.

What 1974/79 460 engine used a specific DuraSpark Ignition Module?
None.
What size the engine is...has nothing to do with what module is used.
The same modules that were used in F100/350's, Bronco's and Econolines were also used in Passenger Cars.
The 1974/79 modules can be specific to certain years, and CA only.
1974 is one year only.
1975 is one year only.
1976/79 is the same unless the vehicle was sold new in CA.
DuraSpark was introduced in 1974. The last year for the 429 was 1973.
Dont forget, that aftermarket "boxes" (MSD etc) will trigger from the magnetic pickup of these distributors as well.
I looked into the duraspark wiring diagrams and they are all similar and can be wired to work regardless of the color of the "strain relief" on the unit. I kinda forget right now, but it seems the durasparks did different things regarding some advance and retard features, but will generally work. Wiring diagrams show that they all work from the same outputs of the key to work. "Run" goes through a resistance wiriing and "start" is a straight 12VDC source from the key until the key is released, then it goes to resistance wiring.
Most ford distributors are about the same under the cap and even the "high voltage" 2 piece can will fit earlier distributors. You can pull the points cam assy and plate off and replace it with a plate and luxor assy from the electronic versions. I believe that even 302/351 electronic plates and luxors are the same and will work.
In the past, I screwed around with these things a lot. You can also do a lot with the advance features in the distributor, just be careful when screwing around with the curves
