I have a 2004 F-250 6.0 liter 80000 miles
The issue I have is when driving at a constant speed when the rpms are at 1500 the motor cuts out and bucks if I press the pedal to the floor motor does not respond for about 30-40 seconmds then blows out gray then black smoke and runs normal.I can repeat this any day of the week it has been starting to do it at highway speeds now.
Sounds like a dirty EGR valve. Search or check the tech section at the beginning of the 6.0 forum for good instructions. One other piece of info you need for the future: on 2004 trucks there were two "different" motors installed. If you will get your production date from the VIN tag on the door it will help. 9/03 and earlier is an 03 motor. 10/03 and later will be an 04 motor. It helps for a few certain diagnosis.
This could also be an ICP sensor problem. Another reason to know the production date. If you have a code scanner or can get by an autozone or the like to get it scanned it would help to know if any codes are stored. Not all codes will set a check engine light (CEL)
Clean the EGR valve FIRST. If that doesn't help it then find a SAFE, EMPTY backroad and take it out and ROMP it for 1/4 or 1/2 a mile. Maybe once or twice. Also, at 1500 rpms, that's a difficult spot for the tranny/turbo/torque convertor just due to the nature of the beast. Try rolling into the throttle instead of stomping it. I bet it blows black smoke for a good bit. I don't think you have anything seriously wrong that a good "blowing out" won't fix.
I will try to cleaning the EGR valve I run the hell out of the truck on a daily basis.
Hmmmmm. OK. Let us know how that goes and if it helps. If not then we'll look for something else. Also, when is the last time fuel filters were serviced, etc. Just trying to eliminate the simple things first. Also, check the tech folder for wiring harness issues. No codes may mean a harness problem/short that the PCM won't catch.
One other thought: When you "stomp it" does the trany kick down immediately and it just doesn't do anything or does it take 30-40 seconds for the trans to shift and then it goes like normal?
I just cleaned the EGR so I will update if it still does it.
When it starts to act up and I push the pedal to the floor it just sits there like it is not getting fuel then it will start to go and stop. then it will take of like nothing was wrong.
The tube is tapped into the drivers side exhaust manifold on top center of the #2 exhaust port. Follow the tube to find the sensor---it's less than a foot away.
Thanks for the help I will look at it in the morning
While you're there you might want to check the map sensor hose which comes from the top passenger side of the intake manifold and goes to the passenger side corner of the firewall. Held on with just a squeeze clamp. It sometimes gets crudded up from the EGR garbage too.
