400 block

On the back of my 400 block there are two threaded holes. I think the are to be plugged off. Can any one tell me what the holes are for and can I use a regular threaded plug in the holes to plug them. Or is there a specific plug made for them.

When you look through the holes you can see the holes for the lifters. Thanks

They are oil galleries. They have to be machined after casting because they can't cast passages that small, so after they drill them they have to plug the ends. You can use any plug to plug them just make sure they don't fall out. There is another one down by the oil filter and yet another on top right behind the intake, they will all need a plug of some sort the factory oil pressure gauge hooks into the one up top and the rest are plugged, but if you want to run a mechanical gauge along with the factory gauge you can use the one by the oil filter.

Thanks, I thought they were plugged off when I took it to the machine shop. I just couldnt see them being open, cause then the oil would run out. Thanks a million

Pipe Plug FYI

Just a little FYI, I am not sure how far you had this block stripped down.
The rear plugs are a 3/8" pipe plug, BUT the front plugs are a special thread.

I got my '78 F250 with a half done engine swap, nothing connected not even the 4spd transmission. So that upper hole that oil freely flows out of should have gotten the oil pressure gauge thingy? Any ideas where it might have gone?
Also, there was another hole that coolant flowed out of, towards the front (fan) of the block, what would that have been for?

Right now everything that "leaked" has a plug and it ran/drove mostly fine. Should receive the service manual on CD from RockAuto later this week too.

Most likely; here's mine (with a T and two sending units):

Post pictures. I immediately think of the water pump's connection to the heater
core (there's another such connection on the top of the block near the
distributor).

In the following pic, there's a black hose with PUMP written on it; is that the
hole you're referring to?

I suggest a book:
