Fuel pumps can be tricky... Dont buy them from Autozone.
SOmetimes they work and then they dont,, I have been told it is from dead spots in them, The old rule of them, is right under the gas tank, with the key on, you it the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallet right where the pump is, it will jar it, and get it to run, but if you shut it off, its dead again... It worked on a Chevy I had, never needed to do it on a Ford yet though...
If you traced all the way back to the connector there isn't much else left. When the pump IS working what is the fuel pressure? The commutator bars get pitted and don't always make good contact with the brushes if the motor stops at one of these bad spots. It may or may not restart the next time you turn the key. Once you get it going it usually keeps going, but not always. One some vehicles if only the pump motor is replaced it isn't that expensive, but if the whole assembly has to be replaced the price goes up. Pull the bed off. That makes the job a lot easier if you can get the bolts out. Sometimes they rust in place and shear off instead of coming out. Bad design. Keep your tank at least one fourth full. The gas helps keep the motor cool which extends the life. Run on fumes all the time and your motor will die sooner.
Mustang was right..a few 2x4 hits on the tank and it ran again. 5 hours later after a stop, it wouldn't go again.
Away from home, so got a local mech to do it. He managed to save me $100 on the parts..and I thought I had a good deal
He fitted a new fuel pump same day, and it's running again.
